Cancellation of Awards for Surkhandarya Governor’s Decree

In honor of Homeland Defenders Day on January 14, Ulugbek Kosimov, the governor of Surkhandarya, initially decided to allocate 661 million UZS to reward his deputy governors and the governors of cities and districts. However, after facing backlash and public protests, the decision to award these funds has been revoked.

A breakdown of the allocation revealed that 201 million 250 thousand UZS was set aside for seven deputy governors, 28 million 750 thousand UZS for the Deputy governor in charge of family and women’s affairs, who also oversees the region’s Family and Women’s Affairs Department, and 431 million 250 thousand UZS for the governors of Termez city and the district governors.

The backlash following the announcement of this decree on January 20 led to widespread public protests against the use of such funds for rewards.

In response to the outcry, on January 25, the Press Service of the governor’s office in Surkhandarya announced that the decree had been canceled. The statement explained that, “Various posts were shared on social media regarding the decree issued on January 20, 2025, concerning the rewarding of the governor’s deputies and city and district governors of Surkhandarya region (decree number 12-8-0-F/25). After reviewing the situation, the decree was rescinded. The allocated funds will now be redirected to the ‘From Poverty to Prosperity’ program.”

This turn of events highlights the importance of public opinion and the power of community voices in holding officials accountable for their decisions. The decision to reallocate the funds demonstrates a commitment to serving the greater good and addressing the needs of the community as a whole.
