Recently, a traffic accident occurred in the Mexican state of Chiapas, involving citizens from Uzbekistan. According to the National Institute of Migration of Mexico (INM), on June 22, a van carrying 14 illegal migrants from Uzbekistan overturned while traveling from Villa Comaltitlán to Ejido Hidalgo.
In the early hours of the morning, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over. Unfortunately, one of the Uzbek immigrants sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. Currently, the individual remains in critical condition and receives medical care.
Local law enforcement officers, along with staff from the National Guard and migration services, provided assistance and support to the victims following the incident.
Further investigation by the INM revealed that out of the 14 individuals involved in the accident, 13 men and one woman were unable to verify the legality of their stay in Mexico. As a result, law enforcement officers plan to initiate an administrative case.
This incident comes just months after reports of Uzbek citizens being abducted in Mexico in December 2022. At that time, a group of Uzbeks was held captive in a house in the city of Gomez-Palacio. Among the victims were five men, one woman, and a minor child.
According to El Siglo de Torreon, the Uzbeks were traveling by bus to Baja California, USA, when they were attacked during a stop in Gomez Palacio. The criminals demanded a ransom of $1,200 from the Uzbeks, but the victims did not have the requested amount. Consequently, they were taken to a private residence in an attempt to extort money from their families.
Fortunately, law enforcement agencies intervened, securing the release of the Uzbeks from captivity. The victims were then transferred to the national migration institute, where they received protection and assistance.
These incidents raise concerns about the safety and well-being of Uzbek migrants in Mexico. It is essential for authorities to address these issues and ensure the protection of individuals who may be vulnerable to exploitation or harm.
