Celebrating 270 Years: Lomonosov Moscow State University
On January 25, 1755, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna signed the decree establishing the first university in Russia, marking the official founding date of Moscow State University (MSU). This historic moment was made possible by the tireless efforts of scientist Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov and Count Ivan Ivanovich Shuvalov, the first curator of the University.
Initially consisting of three faculties – Philosophy, Medicine, and Law – MSU has grown significantly over the years. Today, the university boasts approximately 40 faculties, with a student body of over 50,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Employing more than 6,000 professors and lecturers, including 6,000 candidates of sciences and 3,000 doctors of sciences, MSU has established itself as a prominent research center.
Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov, after whom Moscow University was named in 1940, dedicated his life to advancing science and enlightenment in Russia.
