Eleven Suspects Referred to Judicial Control in Hate and Discrimination Investigation
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has taken action against discriminatory discourses and calls for boycott in a recent investigation, referring 11 suspects to judicial control. The suspects were detained in operations conducted by the Istanbul Security Branch Directorate, targeting crimes of “Hate and Discrimination” and “incitement of hatred and hostility.”
Among the suspects is Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu, a member of the Set Unit of the Players Union, who was taken to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan after a health check. The suspects underwent legal procedures and were subjected to judicial control measures such as a ban on leaving the country and mandatory signing at the Criminal Court of Peace.
In a show of solidarity, various individuals including CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal, TİP Istanbul Deputy Sera Kadıgil, former deputy and actor Barış Atay, and others came to the courthouse to support Üzümoğlu. They met with his family during their visit.
The investigation was launched in response to discriminatory discourses spread through traditional and social media, aimed at disrupting the economic activities of certain segments of society. Out of the 16 detained suspects, 11 were ultimately arrested.
Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu, born on March 1, 1994 in Istanbul, began his artistic journey as a graduate of Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory Acting Department. He has garnered international experience in physical theater and modern dance through his work in India and Poland. Recognized for his performances in various theater plays, Üzümoğlu was awarded the title of most successful young generation artist of the year at the 21st Afife Theater Awards for his role in the play “Troas” in April 2017.
