Strengthening Ties: Conversations Between Turkmenistan and Germany
On April 30, 2025, a significant telephone conversation took place between Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Federal President of Germany. This dialogue highlighted the ongoing cooperation and warm relations between the two nations.
As they exchanged pleasantries, both leaders expressed their satisfaction with the robust partnership established over the years. Berdimuhamedov extended his gratitude to Steinmeier for engaging in this conversation, while also conveying warm greetings from President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. He reminisced fondly about their previous meeting at the Central Asia-Germany Summit.
Steinmeier reciprocated the sentiments, underscoring the systematic and long-term development of bilateral relations. He conveyed his best wishes to the Turkmen leadership, reinforcing Germany’s commitment to supporting Turkmenistan’s neutrality and global initiatives.
The discussions revealed a strong legal framework underpinning their relationship, encompassing nearly 100 bilateral documents. Berdimuhamedov emphasized Turkmenistan’s dedication to enhancing cooperation with Germany and expressed appreciation for the longstanding support Germany provides.
Highlighting an upcoming forum in Ashgabat on December 12 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, Berdimuhamedov expressed hope for Steinmeier’s participation, underscoring the significance of the event.
Amid discussions on trade and economic collaboration, both leaders noted a consistent increase in mutual trade. They recognized the crucial role of the Joint Turkmen-German Working Group, the Eastern Committee of the German Economy, and the German-Turkmen Forum in fostering these ties. They identified key sectors such as chemical industry, transport, agriculture, healthcare, and textiles as areas ripe for deeper collaboration.
Furthermore, they explored new avenues for partnership in renewable energy, green technology, and water resource management. Particular attention was given to the banking sector, noting collaborations with Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and Deutsche Bundesbank.
Berdimuhamedov highlighted the ongoing industrialization efforts within Turkmenistan, citing the use of Siemens turbines in the gas sector as an example of successful collaboration with German firms.
Discussions also encompassed healthcare advancements, showcasing the introduction of German medical technologies in Turkmen hospitals, as well as mutual interests in education and culture. Turkmenistan’s enthusiasm for the German language and partnerships with institutions like the Goethe Institute was prominently featured, alongside a proposal to renew the successful archaeological exhibition "Margiana" in Germany.
Towards the conclusion of their conversation, Berdimuhamedov extended a personal invitation to Steinmeier for an official visit to Turkmenistan, fostering further diplomatic engagement.
The call concluded with both leaders expressing their wishes for good health and prosperity to their respective nations, marking yet another step in the solidifying bond between Turkmenistan and Germany.
