Challenges facing Uzbekistan’s tourism industry
President of Uzbekistan Calls for Tourism Development, but Previous Initiatives Remain Unfulfilled
During a recent videoconference, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan outlined new tasks to further develop the tourism sector in the country. Despite setting out ambitious goals for the industry, many initiatives from a government resolution passed six months ago have not been implemented yet.
The tourism sector in Uzbekistan has shown promising growth in recent years, with tourism exports reaching $3.5 billion and over 10 million foreign tourists visiting the country annually. A new strategy is being developed to increase tourism’s contribution to the national economy to 7% and exports to $10 billion by 2040.
Some of the key tasks outlined in the new strategy include road repairs along the “Tourism Ring,” the expansion of capsule hotels, and the simplification of visa procedures for tourists from certain countries. Additionally, the President instructed officials to promote extreme tourism and attract 15 million foreign tourists by 2025.
However, it is essential to note that several tourism development initiatives outlined in earlier government documents have not been implemented as planned. For example, a resolution passed in 2024 called for the introduction of new types of tourism, such as industrial, geological, scientific, military, and government administration tourism. Specific ministries and agencies were assigned to implement each type, but progress has been slow.
The entry of international online payment platforms like PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay into the Uzbek market has also faced delays. Despite efforts to negotiate their integration, concerns over local legislation and data protection have hindered their entry.
While there is a clear resolution from the Cabinet and a framework developed by the Tourism Committee, the delay in implementation raises questions about the oversight mechanisms and accountability of responsible agencies. As Uzbekistan aims to boost its tourism industry, addressing these challenges and fulfilling previous initiatives will be crucial for its long-term growth.
