Change in Preventive Measures for Defendant in Kempir-Abad Case

The Kempir-Abad case continues to unfold in Kyrgyzstan, with recent developments seeing a change in the measures of restraint for one of the defendants. Kubanychbek Kadyrov, a key figure in the case, has had his detention changed to house arrest, according to lawyer Erkin Sadanbekov.
Sadanbekov revealed that the defense lawyers had made motions to change the preventive measures for their clients, resulting in Kadyrov being put under house arrest while the other nine defendants had their detention extended until May 24.
The Kempir-Abad reservoir protection committee, formed in October 2022, has been at the center of the case. Activists, politicians, and MPs have been targeted, leading to mass arrests and charges of preparing for riots. Currently, nine individuals remain in custody out of the initial 27 arrested.
International human rights organizations, including the International Partnership for Human Rights, the World Organization Against Torture, and others, have issued statements calling for the immediate release of the arrested politicians and activists in Kyrgyzstan. The case continues to draw attention both domestically and internationally, with concerns raised about the rights and freedoms of those involved.
