Chechen Activist Mansur Movlaev Released from Court with Deportation Ruling

Bishkek City Court releases Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev
Bishkek City Court has made the decision to release Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev in connection with serving his sentence. The court also ruled to assign the deportation of Mansur Movlaev from the country to the State Committee for National Security, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Migration Service.
This decision comes following the verdict of the Pervomaisky District Court on October 4, where Mansur Movlaev was found guilty of committing a crime under Part 1 Article 378 “Illegal border crossing” of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. He was sentenced to imprisonment for six months, with the beginning of the sentence calculated from August 20.
Mansur Movlaev, who has repeatedly spoken out against human rights violations and political repression in Chechnya, was previously sentenced to three years in prison in 2020, a case that representatives of the Russian opposition believe to be fabricated. In 2022, he was released on parole, but was subsequently detained by officers of the Shalinsky District Department of Internal Affairs of Chechnya. Following his escape from the Russian Federation and subsequent placement on the federal wanted list, the activist has been residing in Kyrgyzstan since last year.
The release of Mansur Movlaev has garnered attention both locally and internationally, with many expressing concerns about his safety and well-being. The decision by the Bishkek City Court to release him and assign his deportation has stirred further discussions about human rights and political freedoms in the region.
As Mansur Movlaev’s case continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what implications it may have for the wider human rights landscape in the area.
