China Emerges as World Leader in Nuclear Energy
China has officially claimed the title of the world’s leader in nuclear energy, surpassing both the United States and France, according to the China Nuclear Energy Association.
Currently, the country operates, constructs, or has approvals in place for a total of 102 nuclear power units, boasting a combined installed capacity of 113 million kilowatts. This marks a significant milestone for China, as it becomes the first nation to lead globally in the scale of nuclear energy production.
For the past 18 years, China has maintained its dominance in the construction of new nuclear facilities. Presently, there are 28 nuclear power units under construction, which collectively add an impressive 33.65 million kilowatts of capacity.
In addition to its extensive nuclear endeavors, China is also vigilant about managing radioactive waste. The country has established the largest radiation monitoring network in the world, ensuring that radiation levels in the vicinity of nuclear facilities remain within safe parameters.
China’s progress in the energy sector does not end with nuclear power. In a historic achievement, the nation’s installed capacity for wind and photovoltaic energy has now surpassed that of thermal power for the first time, reaching a staggering 1.482 billion kilowatts.
As China continues to advance its energy capabilities, the global landscape of energy production and sustainability is poised for significant changes.
