China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Construction Set to Begin
The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project is finally becoming a reality, with construction officially scheduled to begin on December 27. This major milestone was announced by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov during the III National Kurultai in Bishkek.
President Japarov expressed his pride in Kyrgyzstan’s ability to make significant progress by utilizing its own resources and opportunities. He emphasized that the long-discussed project is now entering the construction phase, marking a historic moment for the region.
Calling it the “construction of the century,” President Japarov highlighted the railway’s potential to create new trade routes, boost tourism, and spur industrial development. The project was initially proposed in September 2022 and involves the construction of a 454-kilometer railway line, with investment shares divided between Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and China.
Kyrgyzstan has committed to investing 11 billion Kyrgyz soms into the project, with China holding the majority stake at 51%. Once completed, the railway is expected to enhance connectivity and economic integration in Central Asia, establishing it as a crucial corridor for regional and global trade. This development signifies a significant step towards increased cooperation and prosperity in the region.
