Chinese Foreign Ministry: Trade War Has No Winners

China condemns US tariffs as a violation of international rules

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian has strongly denounced the US’s decision to impose tariffs on Chinese goods as a “blatant defiance of universal principles and a confrontation with the entire world.” According to a report by Global Times, Lin criticized the US for weaponizing tariffs for its own self-interest, which he says undermines the legitimate rights and interests of all countries, violates WTO rules, and disrupts the global economic order.

In response to the US’s actions, Lin stated that China will take necessary countermeasures to oppose what he described as bullying tactics. He emphasized that China is not looking for a trade war but is prepared to fight one if necessary to protect its sovereignty, security, and development interests, as well as to uphold international fairness and justice.

President Donald Trump had announced on April 9 an increase in tariffs on Chinese goods up to 125%, leading to China retaliating by raising tariffs on US products from 34% to 84%. Lin reiterated that there are no winners in a trade war and that China will not allow the legitimate rights of its people to be infringed upon or international economic rules to be undermined.

Lin ended his statement by highlighting that those who uphold justice will receive widespread support, while those who act against it will face failure. The US’s actions have been characterized as reckless and unjust, with China prepared to defend the multilateral trading system and the common interests of the international community.
