Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Visit to Budapest: Key Topics Unveiled
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to Hungary is expected to further boost economic cooperation between the two countries. Eszter Vitályos, the government spokesperson, announced that Xi Jinping will be visiting Hungary from May 8-10 at the invitation of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and President Tamás Sulyok.
This visit holds historical significance as it marks the Chinese president’s first visit to Europe after the COVID-19 pandemic. Xi Jinping’s itinerary includes stops in only two European Union member states: Hungary and France, as well as a visit to Serbia. In Budapest, Xi is scheduled to meet with President Sulyok and have lunch with Prime Minister Orbán, where discussions on various topics, including sports, are expected to take place.
Vitályos revealed that the ministers of both countries are set to sign 16 agreements during the visit, with discussions ongoing for two additional agreements. Notably, there will be talks about potential infrastructure upgrades related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
Highlighting the importance of financial cooperation, Vitályos expressed Hungary’s desire to become a financial hub in the region and attract more Chinese investments. The spokesperson also mentioned the alignment between Hungary and China on peace initiatives, specifically referencing China’s peace plan for Ukraine.
As Hungary and China approach the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties, cultural programs are being planned to commemorate the milestone. Additionally, the introduction of direct flights from seven Chinese cities to Budapest and China’s recent visa-waiver scheme for Hungarian citizens have been warmly received.
Vitályos emphasized the growing interest in Chinese language and culture among Hungarians, with increasing numbers of students learning Chinese at various educational institutions. She also highlighted the unique Hungarian-Chinese bilingual school in Budapest, underscoring the strong educational and cultural ties between the two nations.
