CHP Congress Speed Investigation: Lütfü War Called to Testify – Latest News from Turkey

Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor Investigates Allegations of CHP Congress

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the allegations surrounding the 38th Ordinary Assembly of the CHP that took place on 4-5 November 2023. Former CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and former CHP Group Deputy Chairman Akif Hamzaçebi have been called as witnesses in the investigation, along with some delegates.

The investigation was launched after allegations of “money votes for money” were raised following the congress. Former Hatay Metropolitan Mayor Lütfü Savaş, who was expelled from the CHP, has also been called as a witness in the case. It has been reported that Savaş is set to testify on February 25th. Additionally, Savaş has filed a lawsuit in the Civil Court of First Instance seeking the cancellation of the 38th Ordinary Congress of the CHP.

The investigation, dubbed “Speed,” was initiated after the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office sent a notice regarding the 38th Ordinary General Assembly to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office due to lack of jurisdiction. In January, the investigation officially began.

According to information obtained, it has been alleged that irregularities took place during the congress, specifically through party-hole voting. Two CHP members have testified to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office as witnesses, claiming that money was exchanged in exchange for votes during the congress. A witness delegate stated that he and eight delegates offered money to his friend, Ozgur Ozel, in exchange for votes, with two CHP members witnessing the event.
