CHP Tension in Afyonkarahisar: Latest News from Turkey

Just a few days before the local elections, a debate has sparked in Afyonkarahisar within the CHP party.
Burcu Köksal, CHP Group Deputy Chairman and the mayoral candidate for Afyonkarahisar, made a bold statement saying, “If I am elected, the doors of the municipality will be open to all political parties except the DEM Party.”
This statement received a response from CHP Chairman Özgür Özel in Uşak. Özel clarified Köksal’s statement by saying, “While speaking in Afyonkarahisar and mentioning opening the doors of the municipality, there was a slight slip of the tongue. After being elected, both Afyonkarahisar Municipality and Uşak Municipality will be open to all political parties and residents.”
Despite Özel’s explanation, Köksal stood firm on his statement, reiterating on his social media account, “I stand behind my words. I will not govern Afyonkarahisar with DEM members and Hüda-Par supporters.”
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu also joined the discussion, directing harsh words towards Köksal. İmamoğlu stated, “He will either find another job or join another party. We do not discriminate against people.”
In a follow-up statement made in Kütahya, Özel emphasized once again, “The doors of our municipalities will be open to everyone, and our mayors will make this promise.”
As the local elections draw near, the debate continues to swirl within the CHP party in Afyonkarahisar. Follow NTV on social media for updates on this developing story.
