Building Collapse in Esenler Avoids Disaster
A potential disaster was narrowly avoided in Esenler, Istanbul, when the roof of a previously evacuated building collapsed. The incident occurred on 1118th Street in Fevzi Çakmak District, where the three-storey building had been evacuated about a month ago as part of urban transformation efforts.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident, but two parked vehicles were damaged by pieces falling from the roof. Upon receiving a notice, the police, fire brigade, and medical teams were dispatched to the area to assess the situation and provide assistance.
Currently, teams are working on the site to secure the area, with the police setting up a cordon around the building for safety measures. Murat Kayaalp, a resident of the neighborhood, recounted hearing a noise while at his barber friend’s shop and initially mistaking it for an accident. He expressed relief that no one was hurt and highlighted the quick actions of three children who managed to escape the falling debris in seconds.
Another witness, Şerif Doğan, mentioned the swift reaction of the children and the damage caused to two vehicles due to falling parts from the roof. The community is grateful that a potential disaster was avoided, emphasizing the importance of safety measures in urban development projects.
