Clouds can contain antibiotic-resistant bacteria: Study

New study reveals clouds can carry antibiotic-resistant bacteria

A recent study conducted by Kranali and French researchers has found that clouds can contain antibiotic-resistant bacteria and transport them long distances. The findings of the study were published in an international peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Samples were collected from clouds at a height of 1,465 meters above sea level for the research. The analysis of the samples revealed an average of 8,000 bacteria per milliliter of cloud water. In addition, 29 subtypes of antibiotic-resistant genes were discovered in the bacteria.

The study explains that bacteria living on the surface of vegetation or in soil are carried up to high altitudes by the wind, and they can remain alive for long periods of time, posing no threat to human health.

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria are exposed to a specific group of antibiotics for extended periods of time. Antibiotics that lose their effect on bacteria can lead to prolonged patient recovery times.

As a precautionary measure, experts recommend avoiding unnecessary use of antibiotics to prevent resistance among bacteria.
