Commemorating Magtymguly: A Roundtable in Kazan Celebrates 300 Years
A round table discussion was recently held in Kazan to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Turkmen poet, Magtymguly Fragi. Titled “Magtymguly Fragi – the great educator and thinker of the Turkic world,” the event was opened by Director of the Institute of Language, Literature and Art named after G. Ibragimov of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kim Minnullin. Key figures such as President of the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan, Rifkat Minnikhanov, and Chairman of the Union of Writers of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rkail Zaidullin, also addressed participants.
The round table delved into the importance of Magtymguly’s literary legacy on a global scale. Discussions highlighted the universal goals shared by Magtymguly, with Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, Chinar Rustemova, touching on this aspect. Additionally, the global significance of the poet’s manuscripts was discussed by head of the manuscript department of the Institute of Language, Literature and National Manuscripts named after Magtymguly of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, Geldimyrat Muhammedov.
Dr. Farit Yakhin shed light on Magtymguly’s work within the context of Tatar historical and cultural thought, while also exploring the moral and philosophical motifs present in his poetry. The round table also featured an exhibition of Turkmen decorative and applied arts, alongside stirring renditions of Magtymguly’s poems accompanied by the Turkmen dutar.
In addition to the discussions, the Turkmen delegation visited prominent institutions in Tatarstan, including the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan, Kazan Federal University, and the historic Kazan Kremlin. The event showcased the enduring legacy of Magtymguly Fragi and the cultural ties shared between Turkmenistan and Tatarstan.
