
Conference with EU’s New Special Representative for Central Asia

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, recently had a meeting with the newly appointed European Union Special Representative for Central Asia, Eduards Stiprais. The meeting took place on March 4, 2025, in Ashgabat.
During the meeting, Minister Meredov congratulated Mr. Stiprais on his new position and expressed his wishes for success in his role. Both sides affirmed their commitment to further strengthening the relations between Turkmenistan and the European Union, particularly within the framework of the Central Asia-EU format.
A wide range of topics were discussed during the meeting, including cooperation in areas such as political and diplomatic partnership, energy, transport, environmental protection, trade and economic ties, as well as humanitarian projects and educational programs.
The importance of enhancing the legal framework of cooperation and utilizing bilateral mechanisms was emphasized. The significance of the “Turkmenistan-EU” Joint Committee, the Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue, and the Human Rights Dialogue was highlighted as well.
Both sides also discussed the implementation of initiatives related to environmental protection, such as reducing methane emissions and promoting renewable energy sources. They also explored opportunities for collaboration with EU financial institutions.
The meeting also touched upon the promotion of educational projects, strengthening partnerships between institutions and scientific centers, and organizing training programs for current and future projects.
Preparations for joint events scheduled for the current year were also on the agenda, underscoring the commitment of Turkmenistan and the European Union to furthering their cooperation and partnership in various areas of mutual interest.
