Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan Collaborate on Joint Tourism Route along the Silk Road
Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan have recently come to an agreement to work together in promoting travel to historic sites along the Silk Road. This collaboration is part of a larger effort to enhance tourism initiatives between the two countries.
Umid Shodiyev, Chairman of the Tourism Committee in Uzbekistan, met with Azada Guseynova, Deputy Head of Azerbaijan’s State Tourism Agency, in Samarkand to discuss ways to advance joint tourism projects. Following their talks, the National PR Center of Uzbekistan and the Azerbaijan Tourism Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding.
One of the key initiatives to come out of this partnership is the Joint Silk Road Highlights Tour, which aims to attract tourists from Central European markets to visit iconic historical sites in both countries. Some of the destinations that will be highlighted include Baku, Shamakhi, Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand.
In addition to promoting the tourism route, Uzbek and Azerbaijani authorities will also collaborate on organizing B2B events, roadshows, and participating in international exhibitions. The ultimate goal is to increase tourist flows and raise awareness of the rich historical heritage of both nations.
This collaboration comes at a time when Uzbekistan is also looking to develop a broader tourism strategy. During the Central Asia–European Union Summit, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced plans to introduce a “One Tour — Entire Region” concept, inspired by the EU’s travel model. He also expressed support for the idea of implementing a single Central Asian visa for foreign tourists, a proposal originally put forth by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.
Overall, this partnership between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan is set to not only boost tourism in the region but also showcase the cultural and historical significance of sites along the Silk Road to a global audience.
