Russian Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko Takes Command of International Space Station
Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has officially taken command of the International Space Station (ISS), as reported by the Russian state corporation Roscosmos.
Kononenko assumed the role from ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen, who handed him a symbolic key to the station. Following the handover, the crew rang the ship’s bell to mark the transition of command. Kononenko will lead the ISS until the end of September 2024, according to statements from Roscosmos.
Notably, Oleg Kononenko holds the world record for the total duration of space flights. On February 4th, he surpassed the previous record with a total of 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes, and 49 seconds spent in space. During his current mission, Kononenko aims to further extend the record to 1110 days.
As Kononenko continues his leadership of the ISS, he will oversee various activities and research projects on board the space station.
