Bishkek Court Extends Arrest of Former Customs Officer Raimbek Matraimov
The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek has once again extended the arrest of Raimbek Matraimov for an additional two months. The decision was made following a petition from the investigator of the Main Investigative Department of the State Committee for National Security.
Matraimov, a former customs officer, will remain in a pretrial detention center until December 26. This latest extension of his detention comes as part of an ongoing legal process related to abuse of office and corruption charges.
In a related case, Matraimov’s brother Tilek Matraimov, the former head of the district, was recently sentenced to a fine for abuse of office. Initially, Tilek Matraimov was fined 1 million soms, but this amount was later reduced to 300,000 soms by the Osh Regional Court.
Raimbek Matraimov was detained in Baku on March 25 by the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan, in cooperation with Azerbaijani security services. He was extradited to Bishkek the following day and has been facing charges of illegal deprivation of liberty and money laundering.
Matraimov, who served as deputy head of the State Customs Service from 2015 to 2017, has been implicated in cases of corruption totaling billions of soms. He has pled guilty to these charges and has already paid a significant amount of compensation in the form of property.
The court’s decision to extend Matraimov’s detention underscores the ongoing efforts to address corruption and abuse of office in Kyrgyzstan. Authorities have been investigating his connections to transnational organized crime groups and his involvement in alleged assassination plots against Kyrgyz leadership.
As the legal proceedings continue, the case of Raimbek Matraimov remains a high-profile example of the fight against corruption and illicit activities in the country.
