Crackdown on Criminal Organization: 7 Arrested Across 3 Provinces

Significant Crackdown on Usury Crimes in Turkey

In a recent coordinated operation across Çanakkale, Balıkesir, and Tekirdağ, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the arrest of nine suspects involved in organized usury and crime syndicates. The gendarmerie conducted the raids, resulting in seven individuals being taken into custody while two others were placed under judicial control.

Minister Yerlikaya elaborated on the extensive operations, reporting the seizure of assets including 75 properties valued at approximately 1 billion 250 million TL and 34 vehicles. The operation, led by the Çanakkale Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and supported by the Gendarmerie General Command, targeted a network suspected of exerting pressure on citizens through high-interest loans and intimidation tactics.

Suspects reportedly coerced victims into signing various legal documents—checks, deeds, and title deeds—as collateral for loans with exorbitant interest rates. Reports indicated that these criminals employed threats to recover debts from individuals unable to pay, underscoring the serious nature of their operations.

In addition to the major property seizures, authorities confiscated 2,478 checks and deeds, 10 checkbooks, and numerous electronic devices during the investigation. This investigation was informed by data from the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), contributing to the crackdown on money laundering associated with these usury activities.

Minister Yerlikaya expressed gratitude to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and the gendarmerie for their successful operations, highlighting the government’s commitment to combating such criminal organizations. He asserted, “There will be no tolerance for usurers,” affirming the support of the nation for these efforts.

As Turkey continues its fight against organized crime, this operation serves as a stern warning to those involved in illicit financial activities that the authorities are determined to restore order and safety within communities.
