The Gaza Strip Faces Critical Shortage of Medicine and Medical Supplies
The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip has issued a warning about the critical shortage of medicine and medical supplies in hospitals and health centers, stating that the situation is reaching unprecedented levels of crisis. According to a written statement released by the ministry, 60 percent of the basic medicine list and 83 percent of medical consumables have already run out in their warehouses, leading to a complete halt in treatment services.
The shortage is expected to seriously impact the lives of patients and the injured, with essential services such as emergencies, surgeries, intensive care, dialysis, primary health care, and mental health all at risk of being stopped. The Ministry of Health has called on international and United Nations organizations to intervene urgently and provide the necessary support to address the shortage of medicine and medical supplies.
The situation has been made worse by Israel’s decision to cut off electricity to the Gaza Strip since the start of the war on October 7, 2023, and to prevent the entry of fuel needed to operate the only power plant in the region. As a result, the limited amount of medical supplies and international aid currently entering Gaza via Israel are insufficient to meet the urgent needs of the residents of the Gaza Strip, where humanitarian and health conditions are at a catastrophic level.
