CSTO Affirms Agreement on State Border Between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan

CSTO Welcomes Agreement on Border Issue Between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan

The CSTO Secretariat has issued a statement regarding the recent settlement of the border issue between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The organization has expressed its support for the signing of the agreement on the state border between the two countries.

Thanks to the efforts and political will of the leaders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, the state border has been agreed upon along its nearly thousand-kilometer length. This resolution of border issues is expected to enhance regional cooperation in various areas, improve security within the CSTO’s area of responsibility, and help achieve the organization’s objectives.

The CSTO wishes both countries continued success in building economically developed and harmonious societies in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. On March 13, following the signing of bilateral documents between the two nations, a ceremony was held to reopen two checkpoints on the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border.

The Presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Sadyr Japarov and Emomali Rahmon, participated in the ceremony online from Bishkek. The Kyzyl-Bel and Kairagach checkpoints are now operational once again between the two countries.

The border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan had been closed since spring 2021 due to an armed conflict. However, on March 13, Japarov and Rahmon signed an agreement on the border, marking a significant step towards resolving the longstanding issue between the two nations.
