Deadly Attack on Tourist Group in India: 25+ Killed
Mass Shooting in Indian Kashmir Leaves 27 Tourists Dead
In a tragic turn of events, at least 27 tourists were killed and around 20 others were injured in a mass shooting in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. The incident took place near the popular mountain resort town of Pahalgam, in the high-altitude meadow area of Baisaran, known as the “local Switzerland” and frequently used as a filming location for Bollywood productions.
According to reports from News18, armed men opened fire on a group of tourists in the remote area away from main roads. The militant group Kashmir Resistance Front claimed responsibility for the attack on social media, citing opposition to what it calls demographic changes in the region and threatening to continue using violence against those it deems to be “illegally settling” in Kashmir.
This tragic incident marks the first attack on tourists in 2025, with the previous similar incident occurring in May 2024 where two visitors were injured in Pahalgam. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the attack and instructed Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah to immediately travel to the region. Army and police units have been deployed to the scene for the evacuation of tourists and a manhunt for the attackers.
The victims of the attack are reported to be predominantly male, with most being domestic tourists from various parts of India. Among the deceased are at least two foreigners, citizens of the United Arab Emirates and Nepal. The authorities are working tirelessly to bring justice to the victims and ensure the safety of tourists in the region.
