
Deadly Counterfeit Drinks Claim 103 Lives in Ankara and Istanbul – Breaking News from Turkey

The number of deaths related to fake drinks is on the rise in Ankara and Istanbul, with a total of 103 fatalities reported in the past few weeks.
According to information from NTV, a total of 70 people have died in Istanbul since January 14, while 33 deaths have been reported in Ankara since the New Year. The alarming increase in fatalities due to counterfeit alcohol consumption has sparked concern among authorities in both cities.
In Istanbul, 92 people have sought medical treatment for fake alcohol poisoning as of January 17, with 38 deaths reported. The number of hospitalizations has risen to 150 in the last three weeks, with 60 people being discharged from treatment and around 20 individuals remaining in intensive care.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul has announced that 190 individuals have been arrested in connection to the fight against illegal alcohol, with 11 of them being detained. Furthermore, 86,274 liters of fake alcohol have been confiscated, along with illegal fuel, preventing a tax loss of 259 million pounds.
In Ankara, Governor Vasip Sahin has revealed that 33 people have lost their lives due to fake alcohol consumption, with 20 individuals currently receiving intensive care treatment in hospitals. A total of 69 people sought medical assistance for alcohol poisoning in the last two weeks, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Governor Sahin emphasized the need for strict actions against those involved in the production and sale of illegal alcohol, with 32 suspects being apprehended and 13 of them placed under arrest. The remaining individuals were released on judicial supervision pending further investigation.
As the death toll continues to rise in both cities, authorities are stepping up efforts to combat the use of counterfeit alcohol and ensure the safety of the public.
