Declining Population in Istanbul

The population of Istanbul is decreasing, despite the love that many people have for the city. According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, the population of Istanbul decreased by 252 thousand people in 2023 compared to the previous year, marking the second consecutive year of decline.
When interviewed, many Istanbul residents expressed their deep love for the city and their reluctance to leave. However, factors such as economic difficulties, traffic, and the fear of earthquakes were cited as reasons for some residents choosing to relocate. For example, the Erden family, who had been living in Istanbul for 35 years, decided to move to Kastamonu due to their fear of earthquakes, especially after experiencing the devastating earthquake in 1999.
Despite these challenges, there are still many citizens who express their unwavering commitment to staying in Istanbul, no matter what. As the population continues to fluctuate, it remains to be seen how the city will address the concerns and preferences of its residents.
