Devastation: Infrastructure and Superstructure Completely Destroyed

The destruction in Gaza has been examined using radar satellite data by Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu, a lecturer at the Geomatics Engineering Department of BEUN Engineering Faculty. Since October of last year, when the Israeli attacks began, Prof. Dr. Kutoğlu and his team have been using the Global Earth Tracking System they developed to monitor the changes in Gaza. The software they created allows them to observe changes on the earth with radar satellites, and according to their findings, almost the entire Gaza has been turned upside down within a year.

“There has been an intense attack in the Gaza strip for about a year. We tested and looked at this place in order to see the extent of this destruction. We obtained from satellite data that almost the entire Gaza was turned upside down within a period of 1 year.” said Dr. Kutoğlu. He also mentioned that the entire infrastructure and superstructure of Gaza has been destroyed.

Dr. Kutoğlu pointed out that almost every street in Palestine shows signs of change, with blue indicating structures that have been demolished or damaged, while red areas show new settlements or improvised shelters. The damage is extensive, with approximately 80-90 percent of the area being affected.

On the map, the changes in settlements are evident, with blue areas representing structures that no longer exist and red areas showing new masses. In Gaza, roads, buildings, and hospitals that were previously present have now been damaged. People have congregated along the coastline in the red areas, indicating the extent of destruction in urban areas.

The images captured by radar satellites paint a grim picture of the devastation in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for assistance and reconstruction efforts in the region.
