Discount Chains Raise Employee Salaries

Aldi Raises Wages for Fourth Time in 24 Months in Hungary

Aldi, the German discount chain with a subsidiary in Hungary, has announced a wage increase for the fourth time in 24 months. The pay rise, effective from January 1, 2024, will apply to almost all positions of the group’s 6,000 employees nationwide. The overall wage increase will amount to 12%, as the company aims to maintain or increase the real value of its wages.

This new development comes after Lidl Hungary implemented a 10% pay rise for store and warehouse workers in September 2023, which increased basic wages for manual workers by 21-43% over a span of 9 months.

SPAR, another supermarket chain in Hungary, also announced a salary increase for the year 2024, with the basic salary of employees set to increase by an average of 10-24%. This will result in the lowest basic wage for employees in stores being HUF 365,000 gross, and HUF 435,000 in flagship stores.

Penny, the third discount chain in Hungary, implemented a significant pay rise for department store workers in 2023, with salaries increasing by 17%.

There are also expectations for Auchan and Tesco to implement wage increases for their workers in the near future.

With multiple supermarket chains in Hungary increasing wages for their workers, it is a positive sign for employees in the retail sector and reflects a growing trend of improved compensation for workers. This marks a significant step in addressing concerns about fair wages and working conditions in the industry.
