Discovery of Mammoth Bones in Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul Region

Ancient Mammoth Tusk Discovered in Kyrgyzstan’s Jyrgalan River Region

An exciting discovery has been made in the sandy outcrops of the ancient floodplain of Jyrgalan river in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan. The Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan reported that a mammoth tusk was found at the site.

The discovery was made by the owner of the quarry, who promptly informed a group of archaeologists. Fragments of the tusk and lower jaw were unearthed in two different locations, approximately 140-150 meters apart, buried in sand and gravel deposits at a depth of three to five meters.

The exposed bones were carefully excavated and cleaned by experts to preserve them from deteriorating in the sunlight. The find turned out to be the preserved lower part of a mammoth skull, although only a part of the skull could be extracted due to the poor condition of the bones.

The fragments of the tusk and jaw were cleaned and initially preserved on-site before being packed and prepared for transportation to a museum after conservation. Experts are hopeful that more discoveries will be made in the area, as the valley of Jyrgalan river is well-known for its finds of Pleistocene fauna.

The Ministry of Culture has urged all citizens to help protect historical and cultural heritage sites and to report any discoveries to the government agency and archaeologists promptly. By working together, we can ensure the preservation of our rich and valuable heritage for future generations to appreciate.
