Discovery Request Denied in Özgür Apartmanı Case – Latest Turkey News
The trial of the two contractor brothers in the case of the collapse of Özgür Apartmanı in Adana during the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, continued without arrest. The hearing of the case was held at Adana 3rd High Criminal Court and was attended by the defendants Murat A. and Mahmut A., witnesses, complainants, and party lawyers.
During the hearing, a former manager of the building, whose statement was taken as a witness, mentioned that he did not witness the cutting of columns in the collapsed building and provided information about the construction process. Defendant Mahmut A. claimed that he did not have any responsibility regarding the construction and denied the accusations against him.
The other defendant, Murat A., also denied the accusations and stated that the construction of the building was made in accordance with regulations. The public prosecutor presented his opinion on the state of evidence in the file and requested the continuation of the defendants’ current situation.
The court board decided to continue the current situation of the defendants, reject the request for discovery at the scene, and postponed the hearing to address missing issues. The contractors, Mahmut and Murat A., face charges of “causing the death of more than one person through conscious negligence” and could potentially receive a prison sentence of 22 years and 6 months each.
