Diyanet Reveals Prayer Recited During Sacrifices: Latest Türkiye News

The Presidency of Religious Affairs has provided clarification on the most commonly asked questions regarding sacrifice worship. They have addressed inquiries about who should offer the sacrifice and what prayers should be recited during the act.
In response to the question of who should sacrifice, the Presidency states that it is a financial worship that is obligated for every mentally sound Muslim who has reached the age of puberty, possesses wealth that is considered substantial in accordance with religious standards, and is a resident. If an individual has 80.18 grams of gold or its equivalent in money or possessions beyond their basic needs and debts, they are required to sacrifice an animal.
Regarding the prayers to be recited during the sacrifice, it is emphasized that the basmala, which is the utterance of “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim” (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), should be pronounced when slaughtering the animal. The Hanafi school of thought stipulates that if the basmala is intentionally omitted during the slaughter, the meat of the animal cannot be consumed. However, if it is unintentionally forgotten, the meat is permissible to be eaten. On the other hand, according to the Shafi’i school of thought, the meat of the slaughtered animal can be consumed even if the basmala is deliberately excluded.
During the sacrifice, the recitation of “Bismillahi Allahu akbar” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest) three times is recommended. Additionally, certain verses from the Quran can be recited, such as “Say: Surely my prayer, my worship/sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. He has no partner. This is only what I was commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims” (An’am, 6/162-163) and “I have turned my face to the One who created the heavens and the earth, as a true seeker. I am not one of those who associate partners with Allah” (An’am, 6/79) (Samarkandi, Tuhfe, III, 66).
It is important for Muslims to familiarize themselves with these guidelines to ensure that their sacrifice worship is performed correctly. The Presidency of Religious Affairs aims to provide clear understanding and guidance to the Muslim community in order to fulfill this important religious duty.
