Hungary’s Future: A Call for Unity in the European Union
Hungary’s role within the European Union (EU) has been a focal point of discussion, especially following recent remarks from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán regarding the possibility of withdrawing from the bloc. In stark contrast, Klára Dobrev, a Member of the European Parliament from the opposition Democratic Coalition, recently reaffirmed the importance of EU membership for Hungary, stating, “Hungary is our country and Europe is our home.”
In a video shared on her Facebook page, Dobrev reflected on Hungary’s journey of over two decades as a full member of the EU. She reminisced about the pivotal moment when citizens voted to join the EU, which she described as a day of hope and a sense of belonging. “It felt a little like we had arrived,” she said, expressing that the accession brought expectations of better living standards, job security, and more predictable futures for Hungarian families.
Dobrev expressed her alarm at Orbán’s recent comments suggesting a potential exit from the EU, emphasizing that this would jeopardize not only Hungary’s identity but also the aspirations and lives of millions of Hungarians. “While Orbán wants to imperil our Europeanness, our place is in the EU,” she asserted, maintaining that she believes the majority of Hungarians share this view.
In summarizing her stance, Dobrev pledged to fight against any efforts to diminish the opportunities that EU membership has created for her fellow citizens. She underlined her commitment to ensuring that the values and benefits of being part of Europe remain intact for future generations.
