Driver Sentenced to 3 Years for Fatal Traffic Violation
A recent tragic accident in Uzbekistan resulted in the sentencing of a driver involved in the incident. The driver of a Cobalt car, Rustamjon Mirzakhatamov, was held responsible for the deaths of two children and the injury of three others. Initially, Judge Ulugbek Ibragimov of the Yangiyul District Court issued a corrective punishment for the driver. However, a cassation appeal by the Deputy Prosecutor of the Tashkent region led to a new ruling.
The court initially released the driver from custody, citing his status as a “well-educated, employed young man.” This decision raised eyebrows especially after a similar case where another driver, described as having “secondary-specialized education and being unemployed,” was sentenced to two years in prison.
Both cases were presided over by Judge Ibragimov, as reported by Kun.uz. Following the cassation appeal, the Tashkent Regional Court reviewed the case and pronounced a new ruling. Mirzakhatamov was found guilty of violating traffic safety rules under Article 266, Part 3(a) of the Criminal Code. He was sentenced to three years in a penal colony and banned from driving for three years.
Aziz Obidov, head of the press service of the Supreme Court, confirmed that the convict will serve his sentence according to the updated ruling. The tragic accident and subsequent legal proceedings serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic safety regulations to avoid such devastating consequences.
