Title: Istanbul Bus Terminal Undergoes Earthquake Reinforcement to Ensure Public Safety
Publication Date: July 13, 2023
Istanbul’s Bus Terminal, a popular transportation hub visited by approximately 150 thousand people daily, is facing a serious threat from potential earthquakes. Visible cracks in the terminal’s columns and corroded iron have raised concerns regarding the safety of the passengers and staff. Taking immediate action, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has initiated plans to reinforce the terminal, making it earthquake-resistant.
Beginning on July 15, the Democracy Bus Station, located in Istanbul, will undergo earthquake reinforcement to ensure the safety of its visitors. The first phase of strengthening works will commence at the viaducts in the southeast region and is expected to last for approximately 150 days. Once the viaduct reinforcement is completed, the focus will shift to reinforcing the main structures within the bus station.
To shed light on the ongoing works, Arif Gürkan Alpay, the Deputy Secretary General of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, provided insights into the project. Alpay stated, “Due to its 29-year-old structure, we have undertaken a thorough examination of the bus terminal for its static earthquake safety. Performance reports have been prepared based on the impact of earthquakes, and we are currently working on strengthening the terminal’s infrastructure. Starting from the foundation and tie beams, we will reinforce the columns and address any other necessary details. Taking advantage of the closure of schools, we aim to accelerate the reinforcement process. Once the main structural areas are completed based on the project’s findings, we will be fully prepared in the event of an earthquake.”
An image released by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality showcases the severity of the cracks and deteriorating conditions within the bus terminal. This visual evidence underscores the urgency and necessity of earthquake reinforcement measures.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s proactive approach to reinforce the bus terminal demonstrates their commitment to public safety. By providing a robust infrastructure that can withstand seismic activity, the municipality aims to safeguard the thousands of individuals who utilize the Istanbul Bus Terminal on a daily basis.
As these reinforcement works progress, it is crucial for the public to remain aware of any temporary closures or changes in the bus terminal’s operations. Cooperation and understanding from the passengers during this essential phase will be greatly appreciated.
With the earthquake reinforcement project underway, Istanbul’s Bus Terminal sets an example for other cities in proactively addressing potential safety risks associated with aging infrastructure. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s commitment to public safety is commendable, and these efforts serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing infrastructure maintenance and upgrades to protect the well-being of the community.
