East Coast Earthquake Shakes Taiwan

Moderate Earthquake Strikes Off the Coast of Taiwan
A 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the waters off the east coast of Taiwan on May 5, as reported by the island’s weather administration. The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 30 kilometers (about 18.6 miles) offshore and struck at a depth of 6.6 kilometers (around 4.1 miles).
Residents in the capital city of Taipei experienced a brief shaking sensation as the quake passed, prompting concerns among locals. Thankfully, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.
This seismic event comes in the wake of more severe earthquakes in Taiwan’s history. In 2016, a powerful quake in southern Taiwan resulted in the loss of over 100 lives. Even more devastating, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 1999 claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepared in case of aftershocks or further seismic activity.
