eBay Registers as Taxpayer in Uzbekistan, Joins Major Global Companies in Paying VAT
The popular American e-commerce giant eBay has recently registered as a taxpayer in Uzbekistan, making it subject to value-added tax (VAT) in the country. This move places eBay among other major global companies such as Netflix, Amazon, Google, Apple, and Zoom, who have also officially registered with Uzbekistan’s tax authority.
Currently, a total of 64 foreign companies are now paying VAT in Uzbekistan, contributing to the national budget. According to the Tax Committee, in the first nine months of 2024, 61 foreign companies in the electronic services sector contributed a total of 101.9 billion Uzbek UZS, a significant increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Notably, nearly 99.9% of the taxes paid came from just 10 foreign companies operating in electronic services.
In December 2024, new requirements were introduced for companies providing electronic commerce services in Uzbekistan. Under these regulations, all companies offering electronic commerce services must now register as legal entities within the country. However, major players like eBay and Amazon have not yet begun operations in Uzbekistan, leading to uncertainty regarding their future presence in the local market.
eBay is well-known for its online auction and e-commerce platforms, serving as an intermediary for sellers to list and sell products to buyers. While eBay facilitates transactions between parties, it does not directly handle payments or shipping, leaving those responsibilities to the buyers and sellers themselves.
As eBay joins the ranks of major global companies paying VAT in Uzbekistan, its registration as a taxpayer signals its commitment to complying with local tax regulations and contributing to the country’s economy.
