EBRD approves $66.4 million loan for Uzbekistan’s electricity grid upgrade

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced its approval of a loan worth up to $66.4 million for Uzbekistan’s National Electric Grid. The funding will go towards the construction of a 230-kilometer high-voltage transmission line aimed at enhancing the reliability and sustainability of Uzbekistan’s electricity supply.
The project is designed to connect the northwestern and southwestern regions of the country, with the proposed 500 kV transmission line linking the Sarimay district in Khorezm region with the Muruntau area in Navoi region. By bridging these regions, the initiative is expected to reduce power outages during peak electricity demand periods.
The EBRD highlights that this endeavor will facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into Uzbekistan’s energy system, addressing existing network bottlenecks. This move towards a more diversified energy mix aligns with Uzbekistan’s overarching goals of incorporating cleaner sources of energy into its power supply.
With an investment track record of approximately €5.3 billion in 171 projects across Uzbekistan, the EBRD has been instrumental in supporting the country’s infrastructure, energy, and economic development. This latest funding initiative signifies a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and reliable energy system in Uzbekistan.
