ECHR and AKPA Urged to Investigate Greek Cypriot Administration, Says BRTK

UBP Gazimağusa Deputy Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu Participated in Council of Europe Meeting

UBP Gazimağusa Deputy Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu recently attended the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Legal and Human Rights Committee, representing the TRNC Assembly. During the meeting, he highlighted the unjust detention attempts made by the Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus in relation to the implementation of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Hasipoğlu emphasized that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has an effective domestic law in place.

The meeting, which took place in Tirana, Albania, also included discussions on a report presented by Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus Deputy Constantinos Efstathiou regarding the role of the PACE (Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) and MPs in ensuring the effective and timely implementation of ECHR decisions. Additionally, Greek Cypriot Lawyer Achilleas Demetriades presented effective methods for the execution of ECHR decisions.

In his address, Hasipoğlu underlined the importance of keeping politics separated from decision-making and implementation processes. He criticized the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus for politicizing recent arrests made in the region. Hasipoğlu highlighted the establishment of the Immovable Property Commission as an effective domestic law, which was accepted by the ECHR.

Furthermore, Hasipoğlu called for an investigation by the ECHR and PACE into the actions of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus. He expressed concerns about the contradictory behavior of the administration, which presents reports on enforcing ECHR decisions while simultaneously obstructing TMK decisions, accepted as domestic law.

Hasipoğlu pledged to initiate an investigation through the Law and Human Rights Committee, where he is a member, to address these inconsistencies and to ensure the protection of property rights for Turkish Cypriots in the region. He concluded by stressing the need for continued monitoring of the situation and the importance of upholding human rights within Cyprus.
