Efficient Water Management for Sustainable Peace
The President of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Cypriot Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) Chamber of Food Engineers, Beste Oymen, emphasized the importance of good water management in his message on World Water Day, which was published on March 22.
Oymen highlighted the vital role of water in sustaining biological life and all human activities, stating that water is essential for the survival of living organisms. He emphasized that dysfunctions in the water cycle can have negative implications on global issues such as health, hunger, education, industry, disasters, and peace.
The theme of this year’s World Water Day is “Using Water for Peace”, and Oymen stressed that countries cooperating on water management can serve as a tool for peace. He pointed out that water scarcity, pollution, unfair distribution, or lack of access to water can lead to conflicts between communities and countries.
According to Oymen, possessing sufficient water resources is crucial for a state’s economic and political stability, and water security plays a significant role in establishing regional peace and security in the long run. He warned that as the effects of climate change intensify and the global population grows, the need to protect and preserve water resources becomes increasingly important.
In his message, Oymen urged individuals to act responsibly by using water efficiently, without polluting or wasting it. He emphasized that water is a human right and called for collective efforts in safeguarding water resources for future generations.
