Efforts to Address Deficiencies in Ercan Airport Fire Department by KTAMS – BRTK

The Turkish Cypriot Public Officers Union (KTAMS) has raised concerns over safety issues in the Ercan Airport Fire Department, stating that the problems have not been resolved despite their continuous efforts. KTAMS President Güven Bengihan has highlighted that the repair, maintenance, and renewal of firefighting equipment and aviation systems have been neglected for a long time, leading to an increase in security vulnerabilities at the airport.

Bengihan has pointed out that the special clothes and equipment for firefighters have not been provided, resulting in a shortage of personnel for shifts. He has criticized the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation for their lack of action and has taken the matter to the Turkish State Airports Authority (DHMİ) General Directorate for resolution.

Furthermore, Bengihan has revealed that the SMART system used at the T&B Ercan Airport Plant belongs to DHMİ and has emphasized the need for compliance with international aviation rules to ensure the safety of Ercan Airport. Despite the existence of signed contracts and an arbitrator, the deficiencies have not been addressed by the ministry or the company responsible.

KTAMS and KİEF continue to advocate for the implementation of necessary safety measures at the Ercan Airport Fire Department to protect the lives of both passengers and employees. The union is urging authorities to take immediate action to rectify the security weaknesses and ensure a safe working environment for all personnel.
