Turkey prepares for General Elections on May 14th, to elect both a new President and new members of parliament. There are four candidates running for the presidency, including Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Muharrem İnce, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and Sinan Ogan. Meanwhile, a total of 24 political parties, and 151 independent parliamentary candidates, will participate in the Parliamentary General Elections. Some will enter the elections as part of alliances, such as the “Republic”, “Nation”, “Ata”, “Labor and Freedom”, and “Socialist Power Union” alliances.
Some political parties, such as AK Party, MHP, BBP, and Re-Welfare Party, have formed the “People’s Alliance” to contest the elections. Meanwhile, the “Nation Alliance” consists of CHP, IYI Party, Felicity Party, Future Party, Democracy, Atılım Party (DEVA Party), and Democrat Party. The Greens and Left Future Party and the Turkish Workers’ Party will run under the name of the “Labor and Freedom Alliance”. The Victory Party and the Justice Party are running under the name of the “Ata” alliance, whilst the Communist Party of Turkey, the Communist Movement of Turkey, and the Left Party have formed the “Socialist Union of Forces”.
The election will take place in 191,884 ballot boxes set up across 973 districts and 1094 district election boards. Approximately 64 million 113 thousand 941 voters will cast their votes, including 4 million 904 thousand 672 first-time voters. 53 thousand 172 voters who are imprisoned in prison and convicted of negligent crimes will also be able to vote. Additionally, approximately 133 thousand voters from the earthquake zone are expected to vote.
The situation remains fluid, with YSK personnel and members constantly monitoring the event and the earthquake zone. The members of the Board will conduct an inspection to identify any issues related to where ballot boxes are to be established and resolve any problems arising.
