Elon Musk joins forces with Google and OpenAI to launch xAI, a new AI company

Elon Musk Launches New AI Company xAI
Billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) company called xAI. The company has reportedly hired researchers from top technology firms, including Google and OpenAI, to work on its projects, according to CBS News. Musk’s goal with xAI is “to understand reality,” as he tweeted recently.
xAI will operate as a separate entity from Musk’s other businesses, such as Tesla and Twitter, but it will work closely with them, the company’s website stated. While the specific projects of xAI were not revealed, Musk highlighted that the team consists of 11 researchers from renowned tech companies like Microsoft Research, DeepMind, OpenAI, and Google.
Interestingly, Musk chose July 12, 2023, to announce the launch of xAI, which he linked to the science fiction classic, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. The date, 7-12-23, adds up to 42, which, according to the novel, is the answer to life.
According to the xAI website, the company’s objective is “to understand the true nature of the universe.” To guide its efforts, the company will seek advice from Dan Hendrycks, the director of the Center for AI Safety. In May, Hendrycks warned about the potential risks of AI, including the possibility of designing lethal bioweapons or releasing rogue AI that harm humanity.
Musk’s concerns about the future risks posed by AI have been well-known. In April, he expressed his dissatisfaction with OpenAI’s chatbot, citing its liberal bias. He then expressed his intention to develop an alternative AI tool that would prioritize seeking maximum truth and understanding the nature of the universe.
Musk also believes that an AI system that seeks to understand humanity is less likely to pose a threat to it. In line with this belief, earlier this year, Musk joined other tech leaders in calling for a six-month pause in the development of AI systems more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4. It was around the same time that he reportedly started working on his own AI company, as confirmed by Nevada business records.
The public unveiling of xAI marks an important step in the exploration of AI and its potential impact on humanity. With Musk’s involvement and the expertise of the team assembled, there is significant anticipation surrounding the groundbreaking work that xAI will undertake.
