Emigration in Uzbekistan on the Decline
New Government Data Shows Significant Decrease in Uzbek Emigrants in 2024
According to recently released government data, the number of citizens of Uzbekistan relocating abroad for permanent residence has significantly decreased in the first nine months of 2024. From January to September of this year, a total of 8,374 Uzbeks made the decision to move to a new country to start a new chapter in their lives.
The majority of these emigrants chose Kazakhstan as their new home, with 6,903 individuals making the move to the neighboring country. Russia was the second most popular destination for Uzbek emigrants, with 1,193 people choosing to settle there. A smaller number of Uzbeks decided to relocate to other countries, such as Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Turkmenistan, and various other nations.
This data represents a significant decrease in the number of Uzbek emigrants compared to the same period in 2023, when 14,666 citizens of Uzbekistan decided to move abroad. Once again, Kazakhstan was the primary destination for these emigrants, receiving 11,921 new residents from Uzbekistan.
The reasons for this decrease in emigration from Uzbekistan in 2024 are not entirely clear, but it is clear that fewer Uzbeks are choosing to permanently leave their home country this year. This trend may have various social, economic, and political implications for both Uzbekistan and the countries where these emigrants are choosing to settle.
