“Enormous Stars Formed – Ten Thousand Times Bigger than the Sun”

Scientists have dubbed certain stars “globular star clusters”, which were all believed to have formed around the same time, and are now being referred to as “fossils” of the early universe. However, it seems the end of their life could be in sight. According to Mark Gieles, a professor at the University of Barcelona, these “global star clusters” are between 10 and 13 billion years old, and massive stars have a lifespan of only 2 million years. Therefore, these stars disappeared early on in the formation of the currently observed clusters. Professor Gieles believes that this revelation could move forward our understanding of the formation of supermassive stars in general, although this will need to be explored further. This research has been published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
