Erdogan Calls for Recognition of TRNC to Restart Negotiations
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made his first foreign visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) after the recent elections in Turkey. During his visit, President Erdogan vowed to defend the rights of Turkish Cypriots and use Turkey’s rights in the Eastern Mediterranean to the fullest. He also expressed his wish for the Aegean Sea to become a sea of peace and urged everyone to work towards this goal.
President Erdogan and his TRNC counterpart, Ersin Tatar, held a joint press conference, during which President Erdogan highlighted several issues, including the electricity transfer from Turkey to the TRNC, ensuring Turkish Cypriots are not viewed as a minority, and the need for recognition of the TRNC for peace talks to resume.
President Erdogan also stressed the need for peace in the Eastern Mediterranean and warned of implementing a different project if anyone sought to impede Turkey’s path.
President Erdogan’s visit to the TRNC and his message of peace for the Aegean Sea comes at a crucial time when tensions are high in the region. With ongoing disputes over natural resources and territorial claims, his visit sends a clear message of Turkey’s commitment to protecting the rights of Turkish Cypriots and achieving peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.
