EU enlargement: Investing in Peace, Stability, and Prosperity

EU Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi recently spoke at a conference in Budapest, emphasizing the importance of the EU enlargement policy as a strategic investment in peace, stability, prosperity, and security. Várhelyi addressed the progress and challenges faced by various candidate countries in their path towards EU accession.

Ukraine, despite facing challenges, has shown progress in its required reforms. The EU has committed to providing significant financial assistance to Ukraine in 2024, amounting to 16 billion euros, if the country meets the necessary requirements. Moldova has entered into accession talks with the EU and is receiving support for infrastructure and transition projects.

Georgia, on the other hand, faced setbacks due to controversial legislation, affecting its candidate status. The Western Balkans region remains a top priority for EU enlargement. Várhelyi highlighted the importance of Serbia’s commitment to EU reforms and urged the opening of competitiveness and growth chapters in talks with the country.

Albania, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are also progressing in their accession efforts, with specific focus areas such as judicial reform and constitutional amendments. Várhelyi emphasized the need for a new “growth plan” to facilitate the integration of new members into the EU, providing access to the regional market before full membership.

The commissioner reiterated that the EU’s success hinges on the inclusion of new entrants and their national parliaments. With ten aspirant countries believing in the EU’s ability to offer long-term benefits, Várhelyi stressed the importance of continued reforms and commitments from candidate countries to achieve EU accession.
