EU pledges €20 million for agricultural reforms in Uzbekistan
The European Union Allocates €6 Million Grant to Support Dekhkan Farms in Uzbekistan
The European Union has provided a grant of €6 million to the government of Uzbekistan to support the development of agriculture in the country. This funding is part of the effort to enhance the National Strategy for Food Security and Healthy Eating in Uzbekistan. The goal of this grant is to create a market-oriented and sustainable agricultural and food sector within the country.
This initial grant tranche of €6 million is the first installment of a total of €20 million that the EU will allocate to Uzbekistan by the end of 2025. The focus of these funds is to help family farms, which play a significant role in producing the meat and vegetables consumed by the Uzbek population, prosper and adapt to climate change while also promoting environmental protection and the production of healthy food.
EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Charlotte Adrian, highlighted the importance of these reforms, stating, “We are focusing on reforms that will allow peasant farms to prosper, adapt to climate change, protect the environment, produce healthy food and enter local and global value chains.” The Ministry of Agriculture in Uzbekistan is also receiving technical support to plan and implement these agricultural reforms.
This grant is part of the EU’s multi-year indicative program for Uzbekistan, through which the country has already received €76 million in funding since 2021. The EU’s continued support for agricultural development in Uzbekistan is aimed at fostering sustainable growth within the sector and improving food security and healthy eating practices among the population.
