EU Reveals Plan for Humanitarian Sea Corridor to Gaza

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has revealed plans for a new humanitarian corridor over the sea to Gaza. During her visit to the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, von der Leyen addressed the press and discussed the initiative, which aims to facilitate the delivery of aid to Gaza.

The initiative, which also involves the USA, the UAE, and the Greek Cypriot Administration, is set to open soon. Von der Leyen expressed her optimism about the project, stating, “We are very close to the opening of the corridor. I hope this market will happen. I am very happy to see that the first pilot operation will be launched today.”

A joint written statement was released by the EU Commission, Greek Cypriot Administration, UAE, USA, and UK regarding the initiative. The statement highlighted the participation of various countries and organizations in the humanitarian aid corridor, emphasizing the importance of the sea route in complementing existing land and air routes.

The statement also mentioned the United States’ emergency mission to establish a temporary pier in Gaza, in coordination with humanitarian partners and other countries. Close cooperation with Israel was also emphasized in the statement.

Von der Leyen had initially announced the plan for the sea corridor on November 8, 2023. The initiative aims to enhance humanitarian efforts and ensure the efficient delivery of aid to Gaza. Discussions on accelerating the work of the corridor are set to take place soon among high-level officials from the participating countries and organizations.
