EU Urges EC, Slovakia, Ukraine to Find Solutions for Russian Gas Transit Dispute

Heads of EU states and governments have called on the European Commission, Slovakia, and Ukraine to ramp up efforts in finding solutions to the gas transit issue. This call comes after an extraordinary summit held in Brussels, where they discussed the matter at hand. According to Reuters, draft conclusions from the summit highlighted the need for workable solutions to be found.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed his desire to include a mention of reopening Russian gas transit through Ukraine in the summit conclusions. The halt in Russian gas transit to Europe, including Slovakia, via Ukraine on January 1 was a result of Kyiv’s decision not to extend the relevant agreement. This disruption led to the cancellation of gas consultations between EU countries, which were initially scheduled for January 7, due to the absence of the Ukrainian delegation.
The issue of gas transit is crucial for many countries in Europe, including Slovakia, and finding a resolution is of utmost importance. The heads of EU states and governments have emphasized the need for all parties involved to intensify their efforts and work together towards finding a sustainable solution to the gas transit issue.
